“Oh, the depth of riches both of the wisdom and of the knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and untraceable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord? Or who has been His counselor?
These verses are indeed fitting for this season. How else could one describe church planting in the midst of a pandemic and increasingly rising social tensions? I could not have imagined or planned the things that would have resulted from this season, but I can say without a shadow of a doubt, the LORD is always at work to accomplish His plans in this world.
Let’s talk about some of the things that have come about as a result of this season.
Once COVID-19 hit the US and things locked down, many found themselves with more free time. One group who found themselves in the opposite situation was Pitcare. In the last update we spoke about Pitcare, a local non-profit in our area doing amazing work (see that update here https://www.missiodeicc.com/blog/march-11th-2020). With millions across the US now without a job, many were struggling to have the resources to provide for themselves and their families. This is where Pitcare and where Missio Dei stepped in to make a difference.
Pitcare turned their twice a month food pantry into a weekly, food serving, well oiled machine. During this COVID-19 season, Missio Dei was able to assist Pitcare with both much needed volunteers and finances. During this crisis, Missio Dei and Pitcarin have been able to serve roughly 30,000lbs of food to the community, serving over 500 families! In addition, Missio Dei was able to volunteer with Meals on Wheels, which served an additional 40-60 families each week! It has been through instances like these serving opportunities that we have been able to share the love of Jesus with people by meeting their needs and telling them of the love of Jesus.
Online Community Group Series
In the last update, there was the opportunity to launch two new community groups in the area. Almost immediately after COVID-19 hit, these plans were largely abandoned for the moment. However, this propelled the Missio Dei team to explore a new medium for groups.
We began community group Zoom calls for discussion time paired with an online teaching video weekly! Our first series was called Shelter in Peace and walked through four weeks on the character of God!

What the Future Brings
No one knows what the future of churches and church planting will look like as we all explore the complications that planting in a pandemic causes. While we do not know what the future will look like, we have God’s Word which shows us His faithfulness in the midst of confusing and trying times. We have God’s Word which promises that He will build His Kingdom, calling us, His people, to proclaim that Kingdom to all around us. God is faithful to fulfill what He promises, therefore, with the power of His Holy Spirit, we will strive to faithfully carry out what He has called us to - the proclamation of His Kingdom and the establishment of His local church.
Is God Calling you to Pittsburgh?
We are looking for a diverse group of godly men and women to join us in Pittsburgh. We are literally asking you to drop what you are doing and move your life into the unknown with us in a new city. The truth is, you can be that Gospel light in the workplace that someone would never have without you. You can be a gospel light to neighbors we will never meet.
If you think God might be calling you to move your life to Pittsburgh with us, I’d encourage you to visit https://www.missiodeicc.com/join-our-launch-team.html.
Become a Bridge Partner
We are seeking 446 people to become the backbone of our support here in Pittsburgh. With only the change you would use to buy a few cups of coffee, the 446 of us can raise over $100,000 each year to support the planting of a new church.
If you have $20 to spare each month and would love to partner with us to reach Pittsburgh, I’d invite you to become a Bridge Partner by signing up at https://www.missiodeicc.com/about.html.
