“Now to Him who is able to do above and beyond all that we ask or think according to the power that works in us - to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus to all generations , forever and ever. Amen.”
Passing of Team member
In our last update, we mentioned two local residents of Monroeville joining the Missio Dei team, Peggy and Diana. Late last year, Diana passed away suddenly and unexpectedly. It was a shock to the entire team. So early in the planting journey, the team had to experience the loss of a team member and sister in Christ. We mourn as we miss her yet rejoice knowing that Diana has been welcomed into the arms of her Redeemer.
Groups & Outreach Update
The Missio Dei Community Group has continued to see growth in many ways! Aaron has begun to be trained up to lead a community group and has been progressively given more ownership of the group. Since joining the team, Aaron and his wife Kristen have stepped up and become key leaders in the Missio Dei team.
Not only have we seen the growth of new members stepping up as leaders but a growth in the attendance of the group. The current group meeting at Cody’s house is now at capacity and ready to begin the process of multiplying!
Aside from the group at Cody’s house, the Missio Dei team has an opportunity to start 2 new groups! One of them will be discussed in the next section below, the other opened up through an opportunity at the local community college! Cody has begun the work of connecting with key people at the community college to start a group on campus to mobilize students for the Kingdom of God!
The team has also witnessed God’s faithfulness to the next generation! We are excited to announce the addition of two other team members (whether they are conscious of it or not), Baby Dye and Baby Bockelkamp! For both families, Aaron and Kristen, and Cody and Jess, this is the first child and they could not be more excited!
Recently, Cody reached out to a local non-profit organization to see about helping out as Missio Dei has a mission team coming up (more about that later). Through this first connection, a tremendous opportunity has presented itself! Before we talk about that, let’s talk about the organization and their work.
Pitcare is a non-profit in the borough of Pitcairn, a neighboring community of Monroeville that shares the same school district. Pitcairn as a community is reflective of much of Pittsburgh. It is a community that is close knit and has survived many hard times. Currently, many of the residents of Pitcairn have a low-income, with little to no access to services and local business that would typically be able to provide job opportunities and community growth.
Pitcare started roughly 10 years ago, simply to love the community and meet needs. Pitcare has grown tremendously in that time! It currently serves roughly 10% of the population of Pitcairn with their food pantry, opened a community lending library which is the first of its kind in Pitcairn and is the only public space you can meet with a roof over your head that is not a bar. They are also working to have a community garden where residents can plant and harvest fresh produce, and open a space for a counseling center for residents!
The work that Pitcare has been faithfully doing is a great witness to the Gospel. The Missio Dei team will begin to step in and help Pitcare serve the community through the Community Library! On top of this, Pitcare has provided this Library and Community Center space to start up another community group in!
As mentioned above, the partnership with Pitcare all started with a question about a mission team. Missio Dei currently has 2 mission teams coming up to Pittsburgh to help us as we labor for the Gospel. The first team is Grove Avenue Baptist Church who are making their 2nd trip up to Pittsburgh on mission! Grove will be helping clear out a space for Pitcare to begin transforming it into a flex space to serve as a counseling center as well as helping build out the community garden!
Through a connection with SEND Pittsburgh, a team from Alabama will be coming up to help 4 of the church plants in Pittsburgh in the beginning of June!
Is God Calling you to Pittsburgh?
We are looking for a diverse group of godly men and women to join us in Pittsburgh. We are literally asking you to drop what you are doing and move your life into the unknown with us in a new city. The truth is, you can be that Gospel light in the workplace that someone would never have without you. You can be a gospel light to neighbors we will never meet.
If you think God might be calling you to move your life to Pittsburgh with us, I’d encourage you to visit https://www.missiodeicc.com/join-our-launch-team.html.
Become a Bridge Partner
We are seeking 446 people to become the backbone of our support here in Pittsburgh. With only the change you would use to buy a few cups of coffee, the 446 of us can raise over $100,000 each year to support the planting of a new church.
If you have $20 to spare each month and would love to partner with us to reach Pittsburgh, I’d invite you to become a Bridge Partner by signing up at https://www.missiodeicc.com/about.html.
